Undergraduate English Literature Program of the Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro University (FIB Undip), has once again held an international academic event through a Visiting Professor session titled “Ontology and Epistemology of Literary Works.”

This event featured distinguished speakers with expertise relevant to the theme, including Prof. Drs. M. Mukhtasar Syamsuddin, M.Hum., Ph.D of Arts. from Universitas Gadjah Mada, Fitrilya Anjarsari, S.S., M.A. from Universitas Diponegoro, and Andri Fernanda, S.Pd., M.A. from Universitas Bangka Belitung.

The session was held online via Zoom Meeting on April 23, 2025, at 10:00 AM (WIB) and could be accessed through the following link: https://bit.ly/OEKS2025.

Examining Literary Works Through the Lens of Philosophy of Science

The theme “Ontology and Epistemology of Literary Works” was chosen in response to the growing need for a solid foundational understanding in the study and criticism of literature. In academic practice, literary criticism is inseparable from the conceptual grounding of the philosophy of science, particularly in terms of ontology (what is being studied) and epistemology (how we come to know and understand it).

Through this event, participants were encouraged to view literary works not merely as texts, but as complex objects with structure, meaning, and constructed knowledge. A deeper comprehension of literary ontology and epistemology is expected to enhance the quality of academic research and scholarly writing in the field of literature.

Encouraging Critical and Structured Thinking Among Students

Fitrilya Anjarsari, S.S., M.A., a lecturer in the English Literature Program at FIB Undip, explained that this event aimed to broaden students’ perspectives in developing more structured and conceptually sound literary research. With a solid foundation in the philosophy of science, students are expected to formulate logical and in-depth frameworks when analyzing literary works.

This event was not only aimed at students but was also open to lecturers and researchers from various disciplines who are interested in philosophical approaches to literary studies.

An Inclusive Space for Scholarly Discussion

As part of the program’s internationalization efforts, this Visiting Professor session served as an interactive platform for the academic community to engage in scientific dialogue and intellectual exchange. It is hoped that initiatives like this will continue to be held regularly, fostering a progressive, inclusive, and globally-oriented academic environment.
