Japanese Language and Culture Program (BKJ) at the Faculty of Humanities (FIB), Diponegoro University (UNDIP) held a Visiting Professor event titled “Characteristics of Literary Teaching Materials in Japanese School Education and How to Read Them” on Friday, April 25, 2025.

The event featured Prof. Junsaburo Kamitani, Ph.D. from Kagoshima University, Japan, as the keynote speaker. This activity was part of FIB UNDIP’s World Class University (WCU) program, aimed at broadening the global academic perspectives of both students and faculty members.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Alamsyah, representing the leadership of FIB UNDIP, expressed pride and honor at the presence of the guest professor from Japan. He conveyed his deep appreciation for the public lecture, considering it a vital opportunity to enrich the academic insights within the Faculty of Humanities.

“Good afternoon, may peace be upon us all. It is with great honor and pleasure that I welcome you to this Visiting Professor event,” said Prof. Alamsyah.

He also extended his gratitude to Prof. Junsaburo Kamitani for his willingness to share his expertise on literary education in Japan. According to him, the topic of the lecture was highly relevant and intellectually stimulating, not only for Japanese studies scholars but also for educators and literature enthusiasts in general.

“This lecture invites us to explore the structure, function, and pedagogical approaches in Japanese literary teaching materials. I hope this activity will inspire future research collaborations and academic innovations,” he added.

Bringing a Global Perspective to Literary Education

The public lecture was moderated by Dian Annisa Nur Ridha, M.A., with strong support from the Head of the Japanese Language and Culture Program, Zaki Ainul Fadli, S.S., M.Hum., and the Program Secretary, Elizabeth Ika Hesti Aprilia Nindia Rini, S.S., M.Hum.

In his presentation, Prof. Kamitani explained the unique characteristics of literary teaching materials used in Japanese schools, along with the reading techniques taught to students. He discussed pedagogical approaches that not only focus on understanding literary texts but also aim to build empathy and critical thinking skills among learners.

The event, attended by students, lecturers, and invited guests, was held interactively through Zoom Meeting.

Encouraging International Academic Collaboration

This Visiting Professor program represents a concrete effort by FIB UNDIP to internationalize its curriculum and academic environment. Beyond broadening cultural horizons, the event is expected to foster cross-country research collaborations, particularly in the fields of education and literature.

Concluding his speech, Prof. Alamsyah officially opened the public lecture and expressed his hope that all participants would gain valuable and inspiring academic experiences.
